Restless legs syndrome is a condition, which is characterized by unpleasant sensations in the legs that appear while rest, often in the evening and night time. The patient has to make efforts which ease their movement, thus disrupting their sleep. More than half of this syndrome occurs while the absence of any other neurological or physical illness.

Restless legs syndrome usually caused by metabolic disorders. Such as iron deficiency, uremia,diabetes, lack of B vitamins, magnesium, alcoholism,hyperthyroidism.This disease has been also identified in 20% of pregnant women, usually in the second and third trimester,the syndrome disappears soon after delivery.Sometimes the manifestations of the syndrome is seen at healthy individuals in times of stress, after exercise, as well as excessive use of caffeine-containing products.

Among the main symptoms of restless legs syndrome are discomfort, scrubbing, stabbing,expander or oppressive character in the legs. They usually appear at night. To ease the condition, patients are forced to stretch or bend the legs, shaking, rubbing and massaging them, roll over in bed, get up and walk around the room. During the movement of discomfort decreases or disappears, but if you lie down, it can resume again.

A direct consequence of unpleasant sensations in the legs and the need to constantly make the movement is a sleep disorder, or in other words insomnia. Patients can not fall asleep for a long time and often wake up at nights. Actually the reason of bad dream is leading many patients to the doctor. While symptomatic restless legs syndrome the treatment is directed at correcting the underlying disease or to fill the identified deficiency of iron or magnesium. Symptomatic therapy includes both non-drug measures and the use of medicines.

Among the other ways of treatment can be also recommended moderate exercise during the day, evening walks, evening shower, balanced diet with a refusal from coffee, strong tea, alcohol, smoking, warm foot bath for the feet or legs a gentle massage before bedtime.
